Political Agenda and Progress Report: Rob Hurtt (R), 34th Senate District

Political Agenda: In August of 1995, Rob Hurtt displaced Ken Maddy as Senate Republican Leader. Since this time, Senator Hurtt has been battling for his for Republican domination in the California Senate. Hurtt's main objectives have been to reduce job killing legislation, eliminate wasteful spending, expand the commitment to public safety, improve education and to reform tax policies.

Hurtt has taken steps to meet his agenda. In 1996, he co-authored a bill with Mike Thompson to move the state to "zero-based budgeting". This forced state agencies to justify every tax dollar spent, starting from the very first dollar. However, this bill was vetoed by Governor Wilson. In 1996, Hurtt constructed a law that reduced the fees of the State Contractors Licence Board. Senator Hurtt helped enable, the "Three Strikes" sentences and stiffen the measures on gang violence.

Position Papers: Right From the Start, Concentrating on Families, UI Comp.: Tax Hikes Go Undercover, Pork Day and Budget Priorities, Hollow Democratic Promises, Reduce the Personal Income Tax, 8% Solution: Fixing Juv. Crime, SB 835 Refused Passage, Hurtt Moves Contracting Out Bill
