1. pick a reliable custodian for the will
  2. file petition for probate with the superior court (venue is county in which decedent was domiciled at time of death)
  3. pay filing fee
  4. give notice to possible beneficiaries that petition has been filed (CA has lots of requirements; must be published, also must be mail or personal notice to heirs, beneficiaries, alternate executors)
