The name under which you are federally recognized - the Kashia Band of Pomo Indians of the Stewarts Point Rancheria - is the name that should appear in the Constitution. You can say, “also known as . . .” if you want to designate yourselves as something else (such as by traditional name). I understand the process for changing your name with BIA may be lenghy, but can be done if it’s important to you.
I don’t care for the preamble because it sounds like a U.S. (non-Indian) document. Here’s a sample alternative:
“We, the members of the __________, a federally recognized tribe/band of _____ Indians, do hereby adopt this Constitution in order to:
- Govern ourselves by our own laws and customs for the common good and well-being of the tribe/band and its members
- Improve, develop and protect our lands and natural resources for ourselves and our children
- Ensure the political integrity of the tribe/band
- Preserve, secure and exercise all the inherent sovereign rights and powers of the tribe/band.”
