The Kashia School is one of the last few one room schools left in California. The school is located next to the Kashia Reservation and although the school is a public school the majority of it's students come from the Kashia Reservation.

Site Council Meeting April 21, 2006

1. Opening and Roll Call
The meeting was called to order by Site Council President Vivian Wilder at 1:20PM
Roll Call: President Vivian Wilder, Vice-President Shawn Marrufo,  Superintendant Nancy Walton, Parent Representative Leah Wilder, Parent Representative Martina Morgan, Lead Teacher Leah Martini, Tribe Representative Eric Wilder, Late Arrivals: Secretary Lynne Morello, Community: Monica Crespo, Maxine Barboza.

2. Approval of agenda
Motion: Martina Morgan to approve agenda with changes, 2nd by Nancy Walton, motion carried.

3. Approval of minutes of March 24 meeting.

4. Wellness Policy
Review of Student Wellness Board Policy.
Recommendation: for the site council to use the handout(examples from the California School Board Association) as a template and make recommendations for changes at the next site council meeting.
  • Martina Morgan will write to colleges for after school programs.
  • Eric Wilder will contact the Sonoma County Indian Health Project Nutritionist to help with establishing nutrition guidelines.

Discussion: providing snacks to Kashia Students.
  • Send notice to the community for donations for snacks.
  • Request for Tribal Representative if any funding is available.

5. Tutoring
R.E.A.P. funding is avialable for after school tutoring
tutors interested in providing tutoring services:

6. Van driver responsibilities
Site council reviewed: Van Rules, Van Use Regulations
Suggestions:
Van Rules:
Martina Morgan requested  hange wording to as of next day. Or immediate loss of privilege of riding in the Kashia School.
  • Bus Schedule: Provide parents with schedule of pick-up times and places.
  • Establish Pick-up areas.
  • Referral by Bus Driver with regards to disciplinary actions for board review
  • Add wording to bullet point to "or under the influence of "

Note: Nancy Walton will see if attendance records can be obtained from the high school if a student violates use of the rules.

Van Use Regulations:
  • Have Point Arena high school provide Kashia School with schedule.
  • Driver has to be tested for drug and alcohol randomly twice per year. NW will see if the KSD bus driver can be added to PA’s pool of drivers for random testing.
  • Change wording on item #3 unless authorized by written permission from the Kashia School Board President.
  • Change location from Stewarts Point to Annapolis Road Stop.

Note: Martina Morgan reported seeing someone in the van during one evening. (possibly someone has a key for the van) she also reported locking the van one evening and finding the van unlocked the next morning. Nancy Walton will see if the locks can be changed.

7. Teacher hiring committee
Teacher Position Notice will be going out next week to various places throughout May.

Nancy Walton will check with the school board to see which board member would like to sit on the hiring committee. (there can only be one board member on the hiring committee, )

Martina Morgan volunteered to be on the hiring committee.
Monica Crespo also volunteered.
Nancy Walton suggested that interested parent committee reps meet and choose person(s) to sit on the hiring committee.

Contact Leah Martini if interested in serving on the committee. by Parent committee reps meeting May 3rd at 3:30pm

The hiring committee will be comprised of 6 people.

Nancy Walton requested to have this announcement put on the Kashaya website.

8. School calendar for 2006-07
Final review by Site Council – approved with no changes, recommendation to send to School Board for approval.

9. Fort Ross State Historic Park Field Trip (Friday, May 12, 2006)

Martina Morgan suggested a bake sale to get funding
for jump house.

availabe for the day.

Language Presentation - Vivian Wilder will have the
students give a presentation on the Kashia language.

11 Comments on non-agenda items
Eric said Bradly Marshall - Environmental Director at the
Kashia Tribal Office will soon be looking into getting
books for the tribal library at the Kashia Teacherage.

FORT ROSS FIELD TRIP PLANNED FOR MAY12TH
The site council has been planning a field trip for the students on May 12th 2006. Suggestions for the trip was discussed at the site council meeting on March 23rd.
  • April promotion will begin for the trip.
  • Requests to parents will be going out to volunteer or present something to the school children at the Fort.
  • Trip will start at 9:30am and may go until 5:00pm.
  • A timeline will be completed by the April 21st site council meeting.
  • Request for drivers.
  • Permission slips will go out
  • Food list to be completed.
  • Sarah Gould - Interpretive Specialist at Fort Ross will give a presentation on the Russian Period.
  • Other individuals will be contacted for presentations.
  • Veronica Corella Kashia EPA Planner will give a marine life presentation.
