Cinnabar Theater presents the west coast premiere of Tobias Picker’s powerful opera Emmeline. Based on Judith Rossner’s novel, Emmeline is set in the textile mills of Massachusetts in 1841. At the age of 13 Emmeline, played by soprano Carrie Hennessey, is sent to work in the mill to help support her family.

Cinnabar’s set design, by David Wright, gives the audience a feel for the time and place with projected background slides of operational looms in the mill and old fashion home scenes including a kitchen with a wrought iron stove. Picker’s music beautifully evokes the hard labor of the mill workers and touches on the prejudices of the times particularly toward women.

A series of traumatic events befall Emmeline, and even though she’s not to blame for any of them, everyone turns against her leaving her utterly alone. Yet it’s here that she finds her strength, refusing to be outcast from her community, she goes on in spite of her whole world despising her. From this strength, wrought with anxiety and melancholy, she sings her way into the audience’s hearts.
