They’re Playing Our Song, now playing in Spreckels Performing Arts Center in beautiful Rohnert Park, is a delightful musical based on the real-life relationship of Marvin Hamlisch, Tony Award-winning composer of A Chorus Line and the then up and coming lyricist, Carol Bayer Sager. With the book written by Neil Simon, the music by Marvin Hamlisch and the lyrics by Carol Bayer Sager, the music and comic tone encapsulate a certain innocence often found in the experience of falling in love.

Vernon Gersch (Byron DeMent) is a famous composer who hires a new lyricist, Sonia Walsk (Ashley Jarrett). One of Walsk’s first comments to Gersch is her version of a compliment: “You can’t sit in a dentist chair without hearing one of your songs.” After talking to her for a few minutes he says: “Talking to you is like sending out your laundry. You never know what you’re getting back.”

But of course opposites attract, and the rockier the start of a relationship, the more passionate it’s bound to become. With songs like Fallin’, Workin’ It Out and I Still Believe In Love, we can’t help but enjoy the ride. Directed by Hector Correa with musical direction by Diego Emir Garcia, They’re Playing Our Song will bring a smile to your lips and many great songs to your heart.
