45. Who Is the Other?
Practice master Zu of East
Mountain said, "Śākya and Maitreya are like
servants of another. Just say, who is
the other?"
Wumen says: Also, if you are able
to see the answer to “the other,” it is an instance of running
into and seeing your intimate father at a crossroads whose resemblance has
changed, you need not question if he is a different other person saying he “is” or “is not.”
The Ode says:
The other’s bow, do not draw;
The other’s horse, do not ride;
The other’s wrongs, do not judge;
The other’s business, do not direct.
