Bertie Glindar
Recon, intense, about 60, with a shaved
head and strong chin. Outwardly a second assistant supervisor of Operations
at QSU 14 on Recon 3, Bertie fights a losing battle to keep Quadrant Pedway
and waste disposal infrastructure systems in his sector from breaking down.
In reality, Bertie is a member of the "Netherites," or Underground,
and a respected local leader in charge of "offpattern Reconnect"
and other operations in several sectors of the Outer Boardz.
As a young man, Bertie was a rising star in
the medical field, having won a "first" at the Inztitut Medical
College and then going on to a management position at Praetor Park Hospital
in Krania, where he met and treated many elite Privates of The Quadrant
-- often for very "elite" diseases. It is rumored that during
this time, he met and treated the Kourtesan Meerna Molloy, leading to a
relationship that was more than simply physician/patient. During the "Great
Purges" of the '70's, powerful persons had him stripped of his credentials
and exiled to the Outer Boardz because his "loyalties" were suspect
(he knew too much about their personal lives).
Unable to practice medicine, and bitter that
his former life had been unfairly ended, Bertie swore revenge against the
"rotten" System and its perverted elite leadership. His own demise
sensitized him to the plight of the vast majority of people in The Quadrant,
driving him increasingly into sympathy with those in the growing Underground.
He joined the Underground in the early 80's,
initially to offer medical help, then his role grew. A year later, Bertie
met a nurse (Elanor) at the QSU 14 medcenter, married and later had a daughter,
Irma. When his wife was killed by a bomb set off by the dreaded KorpOps
anti-terrorist unit in an entrapment action in the late 80's, Bertie became
a leader in the Underground, vowing to "change The System," even
if it required the increasing use of violence.
