DOWNSHAFT
CAUTION! You've reached Downshaft
and are now "off the Boardz." Nowtime,
as it is experienced on the Boardz, does not exist for Downshaft's "disenfranchised
inhabitants" (Disconz
and Anteeks). Only visitors with appropriate authorization are permitted
beyond this platform.
If you are authorized to travel through Downshaft,
note the following: Do not travel after dark (when regular lumination is
terminated), unless absolutely necessary. Bear in mind that Visitor Security
Enforcement operates only within the confines of Dunztown and its immediate
environs. Travel outside the Dunztown area is at your own risk.
Enfranchised Inhabitants and authorized visitors
are required to report offpattern
activity to the nearest Enforcer or Enforcement Unit. Participation in any
offpattern activity is subject to immediate sanction.
Dunztown
Poorly lit and humid, Dunztown is a sprawling, patchwork of run-down
living units and jerry-rigged service centers, interspersed with dreg bars
and plezzhur domes.
Take in a DethRing match
and visit the "Dim Bulb,"(the best dreg bar in Downshaft), but
keep your brodstik with you and watch your backside.
Located on the outskirtz of Dunztown, Downshaft's Enforcerz (headed
by the infamous Emil Zarg) keep order in the land of Khaos. The "Dezu,"
as it is known here, shows no mercy to those who "Trash
Reg" in Downshaft.
The Pitz
10 klicks due south of Dunstown, you'll find The Pitz, where The Quadrant's
waste is recycled. Organic materials are "rendered" and sent to
The Bogz for fertilizer, and the rest is melted down into raw materials
for export "upshaft" to the Boardz. Forced to work 14 hour days
under the most horrific conditions, Disconz and Anteeks last only a few
years here, and then die (most from respiratory diseases).
Take extreme care if you visit The Bogz. Hundreds of years of runoff
from the Hydroponik Farm Units has created a mist filled maze of steaming
jungle-like undergrowth over 100 square kilometers in size and growing.
Some say the Bogz shelter wildmen and roaming bandz of feral children, but
those who have ventured in to find out have never returned.
Main Power Station
Ren Mackenzee, Quadrant Power Systems Manager, does his best to keep
the seven fusion reactorz which provide power for all Quadrant Systems (including
Downshaft) in operating order. As equipment deteriorates, he is forced to
seek favors from the most unlikely quarters.
The Netherworldz
The area between The Quadrant Boardz and Downshaft proper. A conglomeration
of steel girders and beams which make up the support structure of The Quadrant,
The Netherworldz contains thousands of ramps, lifts, and landings which
service Q infrastructure systems, and a tangled complex of ducts and pipes
which transport waste runoff from the Boardz to Downshaft. Dark and dangerous,
it is increasingly used by The
Underground to hide small operational bases and provide safe havenz
for "hot" operatives.
